By default, all facet attributes are displayed hidden except for the top facet, Format. To view other facets, click the facet to display the hidden attributes. To hide the attributes at any time, click the facet and the attributes collapse. In the example below, Author is shown with hidden attributes.

Note: When you perform a new search, the facets return to the default settings. In the example above, Format would be the only one with the attributes shown.
Within each of the facet attributes, the number shown in parenthesis indicates the total hits relevant to your search term. The order will always be listed from the greatest number of hits to the lowest number of hits. The (xx) more link indicates additional results for that particular facet. When you click the (xx) more link, additional results display. Repeat the steps until you no longer have any additional results to display. An example of the facets option is shown below.

Click a facet attribute from the list to limit your search results. The selected attribute name appears below your original search term in the upper-left of the results page. Your refined search results display in the left side pane.
In the example below, the following results appeared for the search term dogs, displaying 1,177 titles.

If you were to click Book under the Format list, this indicates 1,029 title results out of the original 1,177 met this specific criterion. In the example below, notice Book was added below your original search term. This is referred to as "breadcrumbs". Breadcrumbs keep track of the history of your refined search results. They display exactly what facet attributes were used in your current search results.

Select additional
facet attributes to refine the search even further. In the example
below, Hank the Cowdog was selected,
followed by Juvenile fiction,
and then 1998. Notice how
these breadcrumbs appear next to your Book
breadcrumb. In addition, notice there are now 19 titles found as
opposed to the previous 1,029 titles. Note:
There are no limits as to how many facet attributes are added to
the breadcrumb trail; however, once you run out of facet attributes, the
facet headings no longer display. In addition, if the breadcrumb
trail runs past the allotted area, an arrow displays at the beginning
and/or end of the row indicating more attributes. Click the left arrow
button or the right arrow
button to view the hidden breadcrumbs.

If you change your mind and would like to choose a different item under the same facet heading previously used, click the breadcrumb displayed below your search term. A list of all attributes under the breadcrumb heading appears. Click the item you would like to use to refine your search term.

By using the example above, if you click the Book breadcrumb and then choose Large Print from the list, your search results will change. Since there are no Large Print results listed for Hank and the Cowdog, Juvenile fiction, and 1998, these attributes no longer display and the number of titles found changed from 19 to 8, as shown below.

Perhaps you would like to remove a particular breadcrumb completely.
If so, click the Remove
button shown beside the breadcrumb
search term. Your search results automatically adjust accordingly.
If you prefer
to hide the facets option all together, click the Hide
All
button, located
next to the first facet. Hiding the facets option expands the width
of the individual search results. An example of the Hide
All button is shown below.

When you click the Hide All button, located within the facets, the same search results, as shown above, appear longer in width as in the example below and the Hide All button reverts to the Show All button.

If you click
the Show
button, the facets option becomes visible once again.
