Search Titles

Do you want to search your library's database?  Type your search term(s) in the Search field box, as shown below.  Then click Search. Your search term(s) will match any of the following fields from your library's records:  Title, Author, Subject, and Summary.  If you are searching multiple search terms, your results will include all of the terms in at least one of the fields.   To search for an exact match, use quotation marks at the beginning and end.  For a more complex search, see Perform an Advanced Search.

After clicking Search, a list of results appear, as shown below.  

By default the results display in List view.  For more information on all of the available viewing choices, see View Layout Options.  

In the individual results, you will find the following information:

• Title of the item:  If the title contains a long heading, place your mouse over it;  A pop-up displays so you can view the entire heading.  If you click the title, you are redirected to the Details page, where you can obtain more information about the item.  

• Borrower rating:  If the title contains a borrower rating, then the average rating stars will display to the right of the title.  A rating with five orange stars is the maximum rating possible, while one orange star is the least possible rating.  The titles without orange stars have not been rated at this time or your library has this feature turned off.  Clicking the stars will open the Reviews tab.  For information on how to rate a title, see Write Review of Item.

• Author:  The author who wrote the item.  

• Collection:  The section where to find the item within the library.

• Call #:  The number assigned by the library, showing the first available copy.  This information will help you determine where to locate the item on the book shelf.   If you click Copies or Call #, you are redirected to the Copies page, where you can see the holdings information for all of the items.     

• Copies/Availability status:  The number shown in parentheses indicates how many of the copies are available, followed by the total number of copies.  Next to the number of copies shows whether the item is available.   In addition, for those items that are currently available, there is a solid green circle located on the bottom of the right corner of the individual search results.  If there is a solid red circle shown, then the item is not available at this time.  Place your mouse over not available or available and a pop-up provides the library location and the status of the item.  Some of the various status pop-ups you might come across are the following:  In Transit, Checked Out, Overdue, On Request, Checked In, Lost, Missing, etc.  If the title has more than ten copies, only the first ten will display.  If you click not available or available, you are redirected to the Copies page.

• Publisher:  The name of the publisher.

• Tags:  Search terms entered by other borrowers or dynamically.  Generate new search results with that specific term by clicking one of the tags.  The search results affect the entire library database and not just the search term used.  For more information about this option, see Understand Tags.  See Add a Tag to learn how to add your own tag.  

Note: Depending on your library's setup, if Tags is not shown as an option, you will not be able to view or add tags.

• Book jacket:  If available, the image of an item pertaining to the title.  Depending on your library's settings, when you mouse over the book jacket a pop-up advising, Image by: amazon.com displays.  Click amazon.com to go directly to the amazon.com Web site.  

In the event there is no book jacket available for a specific title, either the image space will be blank or a generic book jacket will be in its place.  The generic book jacket only contains the title.  

• Year:  The year the item was published.

• Format symbol:  A symbol representing the type of format of this item.
  For example, ,  , , , .  
  Placing your mouse over the symbol displays the name of the format in text.

• Request:  Place an item on request.  The word Hold might display instead of Request, but either way the meaning is the same. Depending on your library's setup, this option may not be available at this time or the Request button might only be displayed if the item is currently checked out.  Therefore, you would not be allowed to place a request for available items located on the shelf. • Map:  Locate an item on the shelf by using the library map.  Depending on your library's setup, if Map is not shown you will not be able to utilize this option.

Tip!  First, verify the item is available, by seeing if there is a solid green circle located on the bottom right corner of the individual search results.  For more information on using the Map option, see Locate Item on Bookshelf.

• Save checked item(s) to a list button :  Save an item to the My Lists drawer to export into a Bibliography format, subscribe to News Feed, or for future reference.  For more information on this option, see Save Lists.

Warning!  The Request and Save checked item(s) to a list buttons above require you to be logged on.  If you are not currently logged on, you will be prompted to do so.  If you forgot your User Name and/or Password, or need information on how to access your account, see Log On.  If you do not have an account, register for a temporary library card or see your librarian to set one up.

The Sort By drop-down option on the Titles search page gives you the ability to sort your search results by Relevance, Title, Author, Publication Date, and Borrower Rating.  Click the drop-down arrow to select the option you want to use to sort your search results.  The following discusses each option in detail:

• Relevance:  Set as the default, the results are listed by exact matches, followed by some words used in your search term, and then subjects from the MARC Record.  For example, if you performed a search on Butterfly, you may find Butterfly swimming, followed by The world of butterflies, and then California Blue.  

• Title:  Results are listed in alpha order.  Any titles starting with a number are listed first.  Titles beginning with The are considered null.  For example, The road from home can be found listed with the letter "r" for road and not "t" for the.

• Author:  Results of the author's last name are listed in alpha order.  For example, Adler, Adoff, Becca.

• Publication Date:  Results of when the item was published are listed from newest to oldest dates.  For example, 2008, 2007, 2006, etc.

• Borrower Rating:  Results that contain a borrower review are listed from highest rating to lowest rating.  With that said, a rating with five orange stars is the maximum rating possible, while one orange star is the least possible rating.  The titles without orange stars have not been rated at this time and will display after the lowest rating according to the title in alpha order.  
  Note:  Depending on your library's setup, if Borrower Rating is not shown in the Sort By drop-down list, you will not be able to utilize this option.

Selecting an option from the drop-down list will re-index your search results instantly.

To view additional search results within the same page, drag the scroll box down on the scroll bar.  To view additional search results, click the Next button, located to the right of the Sort By drop-down list.  To view pages beforehand, click the Prev button.  There are no additional results if either Next or Prev button appears dimmed.  See the example below, where Prev is displayed as dimmed.

Note:  You might experience slowness of a page loading, which in this case you'll see a Spinner displayed to the right of the Next button.

Tips on Searching
 

• Learn how to narrow down your results by using Facets.  

• Broaden or limit your results by Locations.  

• If your search term did not retrieve any results, select a suggestion from the "Did you mean" list to initiate a new search or recheck the spelling in the Search box.

• Perform an Advanced Search.
